Duncan is a beautiful young male Himalayan cross that came into NASAP’s care from Black Gold Pound. Duncan has a beautiful coat and a huge, thick tail that looks just like a feather duster. He also has a great, funny personality. He likes to gently bat your leg with his paw to let you know that he is down there and in need of some attention.  When Duncan went in to the vet clinic for a routine neuter, it was determined that he is suffering from bilateral juvenile cataracts, making his eyes hazy and significantly affecting his eyesight. The vet also commented that she had never seen such a high heart rate in a cat. Duncan underwent an immediate electrocardiogram, and no abnormalities were noted other than the extremely fast beating of his heart. Duncan required further testing (an ultrasound and X-rays) to help diagnose the cause of his elevated heart rate. Duncan's heart is unusually thickened on one side. The reason for his health problems is unknown but it may be congenital. His neuter was recently completed using an epidural and sedation because it was too dangerous to put him under using a general anesthetic. We are very grateful that we found Duncan so that he can receive the care he needs in his permanent care foster home. NASAP would deeply appreciate  donations targeted towards Duncan’s medical care, which has been quite costly.

Diesel is a 2 year old neuter male German Shepherd cross that was surrendered to us due to personal circumstances in his family.  It was observed while Diesel was in our care that he had some problems with stairs, that the muscle mass on his hips were not well developed and when touched in the hip area he seemed to have discomfort.   Diesel was taken into Towne Centre Veterinary Clinic in Edmonton for examination and ex rays.  The vet diagnosed him with Canine Hip Dysplasia in both hips which was determined to be severe and Canine Cruciate Ligament Injury in his right front knee.We have been told that the Ligament Injury may have been caused from the Hip Dysplasia.  Usually when a dog has a ligament injury you find that the dog will not put their weight on their injury leg; Diesel cannot do this as he needs to compensate for the back hips and shifts most of his weight to his front legs and in doing this the vet feels that this may have caused the ligament injury.  NASAP was given the option of surgery, but we were also told by the vet that with such a large dog and the severity of the hip dysplasia, the surgery cannot be guaranteed to give him any real improvements in his condition.  Because of his medical problems, the vet determined that Diesel is not adoptable.  Instead of putting Diesel through three operations and a long recovery period with no guarantee that his condition would improve, NASAP then decided to place him in permanent care and to give him a place to live and be cared for, loved and cherished at this time.   Diesel is currently receiving medication for pain management, special food for mobility problems, supplements and is currently undergoing acupuncture treatment in hopes to help with pain management and mobility issues. Diesel is an awe inspiring dog he is a gentle, intelligent boy who just loves to talk, play, cuddle and just hang out with his people both human and furry.

Lizzie has been in permanent care with NASAP for approximately 8 years.   She was a young dog when rescued from an abandoned breeding kennels.     She was traumatised to the point of becoming almost catatonic when handled.    She never showed any aggression but would not approach strangers willingly.    Lizzie was deemed unsuitable for adoption and has spent a happy life with Colleen her foster Mom.     She is well and happy and has made slow but steady progress under Colleen's careful and patient tutelage.   Lizzie lives with a spunky little maltese cross called Jazz and two cats.   Jazz and Lizzie are firm friends and Lizzie is quite protective of her little sister, always looking out for her when they are out on walks etc.    Jazzie does all the talking and Lizzie is happy to let her hog the limelight.    We wish Lizzie many more happy years with Colleen and are very happy to have been able to save this lovely gentle dog.

Juice is a neutered, long haired orange tabby, we think >12 years old. He was found in the Spruce Grove area and taken into the vet clinic. His tattoo traced him back to his owners, but they had moved & couldn't be contacted. He enjoys the company of friendly cats & is quite calm around cat-friendly dogs. He is upset by change, but in a few days he relaxes into a quiet, easy to care for boy. He is not cuddly but does love to be near you, laying on the floor of whatever room you happen to be in, eyes half closed & tail slowly swishing. A quick rub on the bridge of his nose or a pet between his ears is all he asks from you. He has a wonderful habit of sitting on his haunches with his front feet in the air when he thinks something good is on its way (like warm soft cat food!). He prefers monitoring household action from the back of the couch or the windowsill. He will, however, come to greet newcomers to the house like a gentleman host should!
