Lucky

Lucky

On March 2, 2007 while working in a patrol capacity with the Edmonton City Police, a call came in a regarding a dog that was hit by a car and Sgt. Karen Ockerman responded. Two of her squad mates took the injured dog to the Emergency Vet Clinic for immediate care. The dog was treated for an injury to his right leg (not broken but badly cut and described as a "degloving injury") and was sent to the City Pound.

On Thursday, March 08, no one had claimed the dog yet so Sgt. Ockerman claimed him as she had a knew someone who could give him a home. The vet tech who microchipped him remarked about fate intervening, as his microchip contains "911" in his identification. After picking up the dog, now named "Lucky" on March 10, he was taken to a local veterinarian for assessment before going to his new home. When the dressing came off it was revealed Lucky has an extensive laceration over the dorsal aspect of his antebrachium. The recommendation was to have the wound edges debrided and the incision closed. Surgery is now booked for Tuesday, March 20 at Beaverhill Veterinary Services Ltd. in Tofield, Alberta.

Lucky met his new owners and initially all seemed well. Unfortunately, they called the following day and it was not working out. Lucky did not get along with their other 2 dogs and seemed very agitated by them. However, Lucky was great around their kids and with them. A squad mate of the Sergeant, Cst. Trish Gagne (pictured left), agreed to look after Lucky until arrangements could be made for his care. He is now being spoiled at Prairie Rose Boarding Kennels until his surgery is complete and a new family found.

Lucky's surgery and recovery will be costly. Please assist by donating. Email donations@nasap.ca or contact 922-0250. All donations over $20.00 are eligible for a tax receipt.
