Miela

Miela now 3kitten

Miela originally came to NASAP from Onoway vet clinic/pound in June 2007 as a 5 week old kitten with her brother Marble. NASAP named her Sage and she was adopted at 8 weeks old. She was renamed Miela by her new family. She lived with them in their busy household for 8 months at which time she started having litterbox issues. Her problem was diagnosed as hemorrhagic cystitis, a painful condition of the urinary tract that can be stress-induced. Her owners chose not to see Miela through that problem and they surrendered her back to NASAP. She re-entered the foster care program a few months ago as a pudgy and happy one-year old. Unfortunately and for reasons not yet understood, Miela experienced unexpected extreme weight loss shortly after she re-entered foster care. She spent time at the emergency vet clinic where she was treated for hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease brought on by the rapid weight loss), anemia, and dehydration. She required further treatment at Mayerthorpe Veterinary Services, including a feeding tube to help her take in enough nourishment while her liver healed. She made wonderful progress on the feeding tube and it was recently removed. She is now eating well enough to support herself and put on weight again. The vets are optimistic that Miela will pull through and live a normal life if she can continue to receive the supportive care she needs.

Miela has improved a tremendous amount but she will require a special home. She will need a stress-free home preferably with no children and only a maximum of one other cat. Preferably one that is as playful as she is. The main concern with Miela is her appetite. Her appetite will have to be carefully monitored; she is doing very well in foster care and is eating a large amount. She has put on a ton of weight and will do fine in a new home if she is happy. She is an amazing girl that deserves a second chance at being a great companion for someone. We keep telling her that someone is out there for her that will give her a home where she will be so happy and that someone will take really good care of her.

Right now Meila is a beautiful 1 year old, orange tabby. She has such big sweet eyes. She will play with you for hours, she runs around the house waiting for you to chase her and then turns around and chases you. She loves it when you throw things in the air for her to catch and then bats them around. She has never ever used her claws when she plays though. She is very gentle in that way. She will eventually settle down and snuggle beside you on the couch but still expects all your attention to be directed at her, she wants pets. When you are not home Meila is always found in her cat condo watching everything that is going on outside just waiting for you to come home and play with her.

Update: Meila recently went for a sleepover at another foster home for a few days and handled the transfer very well; her appetite and energy levels stayed the same. She handles new environments very well and is a very outgoing cat. Her foster mom let her out of the kennel and she ran around the house until she covered every inch and then she settled down for a bite to eat, some playtime and a nap. She is now back in her regular foster home and acts as if nothing has happened.

NASAP would dearly appreciate targeted donations towards Miela's veterinary care as her life-saving treatment was expensive. Please help us help Miela. Thanks so much!
